Our writers include:

 

Rebecca Lehman who holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Her poems have been published in Tin House, Denver Quarterly, The Iowa Review, Indian Review, Conduit, The Gettysburg Review, Hayden’s Ferry Review, Rattle, Contrary, Drunken Boat and Connotations. Her poetry has been a finalist for the Colorado Poetry Prize, The Beatrice Hawley First Book Award, The Brittingham and Pollak Prizes and a semifinalist for the Crab Orchard First Book Award. She has taught poetry at the University of Iowa and Florida State University. She is comfortable working with all forms of contemporary verse, including formal poetry, narrative poetry and experimental poetry. 

 

Kurt Gutjahr (M.F.A. The Iowa Writers’ Workshop, M.A. Creative Writing, University of New Mexico) has taught creative writing at The University of New Mexico, The University of Iowa, and Naropa University.   His stories have won the D.H. Lawrence Award for Short Fiction and he has been a finalist in numerous nationwide contests.  For the past twelve years Kurt has worked in all facets of the writing profession, editing a literary magazine, assisting in running both the Iowa Summer Writing Festival and the Taos Writers Conference, and working extensively as a writing coach.  He has edited non-fiction manuscripts and has helped both published and unpublished writers hone their manuscripts both stylistically and structurally. Kurt is currently at work on a memoir that uses domestic space as a lens through understanding his own rather complicated domestic life. In addition, he is working on an existential "mystery" novel that takes place in New Mexico

 

Ted Taylor is a graduate of University of Arizona's esteemed Creative Writing Program, Ted's work has appeared frequently in Kyoto Journal,  Kansai Time Out, The Icebox Haiku Journal and Deep Kyoto, as well as in various print and online publications.  A Contributing Editor at Kyoto Journal, he won the top prize in the Kyoto International Cultural Association Essay Contest.   He is currently at work on a book about his walking the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage.

Poetry

 

 

1)   Full Manuscript Review

You will receive a review of your book-length manuscript (40-60 pages), focusing on issues of organization, narrative arc, and editing down to their strongest work. This package includes close readings (with line edits, plus ½ page of typed feedback per poem) of five poems in the manuscript, as well as 1-2 pages of written feedback on the manuscript as a whole. Additionally, this package also includes a 30 minute phone consultation.

Fee: $750

 

2)   Short Manuscript/Chapbook Review

You will receive a review of your chapbook-length manuscript (15-30 pages) of poetry with attention to issues of organization, narrative arc, and editing down to your strongest work. This package includes close readings (with line edits, plus ½ page of typed feedback per poem) of 3 poems, as well as 1-2 pages of written feedback on the manuscript as a whole. Also includes a 30 minute phone consultation.

Fee: $550

 

3)   Individual Poems Review

You will receive close readings (with line edits) of 5-10 poems for a total of 5- 10 pages (expect around ½ page typed feedback for each poem), focusing on each poem individually.

Fee: $450

 

Prose

 

 

Graduates of the country’s top tier professional writing programs including the Iowa Writers’ Workshop will work with you to craft the best prose possible. Our editors have extensive experience with non-fiction, prescriptive non-fiction, memoir, genre fiction, young-adult fiction, and novels. 

 

Already have a book and need some help?

 

Manuscript Review

One of our editors will read 15 pages (approximately 5,000 words) of the your manuscript and provide 3 single-spaced pages assessing the manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses in terms of grammar, syntax, scene construction, structure, plot, character development, pacing, voice, POV, & dialogue. They will suggest fixes and possible avenues for the manuscript’s completion. They will also complete several pages of line edits to point out recurring issues with syntax, grammar and word choice.

Fee: $500

 

Manuscript Edit

One of our award winning editors will read through up to 300 hundred pages addressing the issues identified in the assessment and including thirty pages of in-depth analysis, a 5 page line edit and a follow up phone conversation with the editor. This analysis will identify the manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses as well as concrete fixes to strengthen the narrative arc, structure, characters, plot and dialogue. All suggestions will take into account the author’s goals, the particular manuscripts identify as well as classical craft considerations to make your manuscript as strong as possible.

Write Your Book

 

Goose River Press offers a unique service that allows you to be mentored by an award winning author to create a manuscript of up to 300 pages in as little as 2-6 months. You will be mentored on the finer aspects of prose and we will provide specific advice on how to improve your description, dialogue, character, and pacing. This package includes:

 

1.        An initial 45-minute phone consultation, monthly phone consultations, and a final exit phone consultation.

2.        A written review of 50 pages per month either once a month or divided into two 25 page reviews.  Our editors will provide a 5 page double-spaced, 

           written analysis for every 25 pages submitted.

 

3.        Our editor will go through several pages of your manuscript “fixing” sentences through line edits, as well as telling you why these changes improve the 

           manuscript. These edits don’t specifically address grammar but rather teach craft skills so you can produce a polished piece of prose.
